The heir to Austria, Francis Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie Chotek, were shot and killed on Sunday, June 28, 1914, at about 10:45 am. Earlier that morning Ferdinand was going to have a meeting with the governor. Upon arrival a grenade was thrown at the car Francis was in. The grenade missed and detonated behind them hitting security and citizens. After a rest at the governor's, the couple decided to go visit the victims in the hospital.  While 19-year-old Gavrilo Princip a member of the black hand, was at a cafe when he saw the couple with low security due to miss communication. Princip saw an opportunity, and fired two bullets the first hitting Sophie Chotek in the abdomen, and then hitting Francis Ferdinand, in the neck. Francis leaned over his wife and said "Don't die darling, live for our children." Nobody could get to Ferdinand fast enough, sadly leaving him to bleed out. Sophie died later, on the way to the hospital.
