HITLER MARCHES INTO RHINELAND

The Treaty Versailles states that Belgium, the Netherlands, and Rhineland was to have no German troops stationed in those areas. Another restriction was that Germany’s army could only have 100,000 men and only 36 ships for the navy.  However France was still worried about their safety against Germany so in 1935 France signed a treaty of friendship and mutual support with the USSR. Germany claimed that the Treaty France made was hostile toward them. In 1936 Hitler marched his army into Rhineland, contrary to the terms of the Treaties of Versailles. This was one of the most risky moves made by Germany,

and a lot of the generals were nervous about marching in because their army was so small. However Hitler kept marching on putting pressure on the League of Nations to intervene. Since France was on the verge of general election they would not act without Britain's support. But the British Foreign Secretary, Anthony Eden meet with the German ambassador and Britain decided that the treaty of versailles was unfair and was over restrictive toward Germany, so the British government decided to do nothing. Hitler moved out of Rhineland in 1936. In 1939 Germany took over Czechoslovakia and then Poland in 1939.
