1. Explain why Pap has Huck locked up.

Since pap is a greedy old man who needs money which his son has if he stays with Huck he will be given the money that Huck has, but he knows Huck will try to escape so he locks Huck up.

2. Create a visual of how Huck escapes The Shanty.

Huck finds a little saw and breaks out. But Huck new that his father would come looking for him so he murdered a pig and spread the blood everywhere to make it look like someone broke in and murdered Huck.

 3. In chapter 8 Huck and Jim run into each other. Huck says that people will call him a “low down Abolitionist and despise me for keeping mum” in reference to Jim running away. Explain what it  means to be an Abolitionist. Why is it Huck is concerned about being called one? You’ll have to consider both the time period and the setting of the novel to answer the question.

Huck is concerned on being called an abolitionist because back then abolitionist is a word they despised especially in the South.

4. There are several things that give Huck away when he pretends to be a girl. List them. Then, come up with 3 things that would give a boy away and 3 things that would give a girl away (if the  roles were reversed) in our modern times.

For starters Huck says his name is Sarah first then when the women asked again he says it’s Mary. Another thing huck did wrong was he acted like a man and spread open his legs and slouched. If he wanted to get away with it he should of practiced his girly voice, make sure he knows the name, and sit up right with his legs crossed. If it would of been switch (a women acting like a man) then she should slouch, burp, just act a little less innocent a petie.

1. What is the story of King Solomon and his child? How does Jim interpret the story?

The story of King solomon is two women claimed to be the mother of a baby so King Solomon threatened that they should cut the baby in half so the women can both have a part. Jim thought that this was very foolish saying "had some er de dad-fetchedes' ways I ever see"

2 .When Jim wakes up after their separation in the fog, what does Jim’s reaction to Huck’s joke tell us about him? How do you feel about Jim at this is?

After Huck plays a trick on Jim in the fog then reveals that it was just a joke Jim gets very frustrated because he was worried that Huck was dead or hurt. This shows that Jim cares about Huck on almost a parent level.

3. Jim is very superstitious. From a historical standpoint, why do you think this is?

The 1830’s-40’s  was a very hard time for the black race as they were treated like objects instead of humans. Since they were treated so bad I think they needed something to hold onto. Whether that be a family member or a religion. Having faith in a religion can keep someone going and hope that there belif will guide them to a better place.

4. “It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger -  but I done it, and I warn’t ever sorry for it afterwards, neither.” What does this line tell us about                     Huck?

Huck first saw black people as tool’s, big and scary. He never thought he would be friends with one let alone even talk to one, but he managed the courage to do so. Once he did he never regretted it  because he is starting to see that there people too.

5. At the end of chapter 16 Huck is struggling with giving Jim up. Outline the battle that he has

with himself, and explain his actions when the men come up looking for the 5 escaped slaves.Huck feels bad for helping Jim escape because Jim belonged to Widow Douglas. Huck keeps thinking about it and all of the adventures him and Jim have had so far, this changes his mind and he thinks if he were to turn in Jim then he would feel just as bad.

1.At the very end of chapter 22 we see the handbill that the king and the duke will pass out. The duke says “if that line don’t fetch them, I don’t know Arkansas!”

Why would the line at  the bottom of the handbill work to get people into the play?

At this time Arkansas has been tarring and feathering women and children. This is because they do not have any respect for them. By not inviting them to the circus more men would come.

2.Towards the end of chapter 23 we see this line: “What was the use to tell Jim these warn’t  real kings and dukes? It wouldn’t a done no good; and besides, it was just as I said; you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.”

a.Why doesn’t Huck see the use in telling Jim?

Huck doesn't see the point because it wouldn't make a difference and from what i gather Jim would not support or be apart of someone who lies so much.

b.What does Huck mean by “you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.”?

You couldn’t tell the difference between a real king and the one who is joining there adventure because most kings at the time were doing terrible things for example in the book it talks about Henry the 8th beheading every women he married.

3.The final line in chapter 24 reads: “It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race.” What is Huck talking about? What does it tell us (the reader) about Huck that he feels this way?

When Duke and King pretend to be the dead man’s brothers it makes Huck sick because, there taking advantage of someone and is stealing from a preach and a deaf person, it show’s humanity at its worst. This shows that Huck has grown up back in the beginning Huck would probably not care or even find it funny just like how he thought it was cool to join Tom Sawyer's gang.

4.In chapter 25 we meet the doctor. How does the doctor know that the king and the duke  are a fraud?

The doctor knows that King and Duke are frauds because the King keeps calling obsequies, orgies. The king’s accent is also horrendous and obviously fake.

5.The king and the duke consider leaving in the middle of the night with the money (chapter 26). Why don’t they?

At first The king was worried about them being revealed to be frauds so they want to leave to insure that they will still have the money, but there is so much money in selling the property so they decided to just sell the property first.

27-35

Chapters 27-30

1.Why did people stay up with the dead during this time period? (Chapter 27)

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn takes place in 1830’s and 40’s back then was a different time when people were racist and almost everyone was catholic. When someone close to another dies they don’t want their deceased friend be alone.

2.What do we learn (or reaffirm) about Huck when he tells Miss Mary Jane the slaves will see their family again in inside of two weeks? (Chapter 28)

We learn that although in the beginning Huck was a very immature boy who did not understand much has grown throughout his journey, he has grown empathy for the African American through Jim.

3.What were the two methods the townspeople used to try to identify who the brothers were and who the frauds were? (Chapter 29)

The townspeople grill the brothers trying to figure out which one is not the real brother but no good comes out of that so they suggest Duke and King hand over the money until things get resolved but there is no money because Huck stole it. King and Duke have a good idea and take out one of the letters they stole from Peter, the townspeople decide to have a hand writing contest but neither Harvey or the King match the hand writing. Finally Harvey states that his brother has a tattoo on his chest, King says it’s a blue arrow, and Harvey says it was his initials.

Tuesday: Huck Finn Discussion Questions and Outlining Papers

      Chapters 31-35

1.Huck says “You can’t pray a lie.” What lie is he trying to pray about? What does he mean? (Chapter 31)

In chapter 31 Huck was praying to write a letter to Ms.Watson to give Jim back but “you can’t pray a lie” because he doesn't want to send him back he wants to help Jim escape.

2.Why does Huck tear up the letter he writes? (Chapter 31)

Huck tears up the letter because he doesn't want to send Him back Huck wants to get Jim with his family where he belongs plus I think Huck has come to a liking of Jim and wants to stay with him so if he send’s Jim back he would be all by himself.

3.Huck is disappointed that Tom would help him steal Jim. He says “Tom Sawyer fell, considerable, in my estimation. Only I couldn’t believe it. Tom Sawyer a nigger stealer!” What do you think of this? (Chapter 33)

Huck always looked up to Tom in a way even if he caugh Tom in some lies. Since Huck saw Jim as a gentleman and like everyone else in the South who is Catholic, steals, and has no empathy for African Americans, Huck thought Jim would not be okay with stealing a Slave.

4.Huck says two things at the end of chapter 33:

1.“Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.”

2.“But that’s always the way: it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t go no sense, and just goes for him anyway.”

What does Huck mean by these two statements?

“Human beings can be awful cruel to one another” can go two different ways, the way that Duke and King fooled so many people to try and fit in with Tom Sawyer’s family or Huck feeling bad for Duke and King although they were rude to everyone.

5.Why are Tom and Huck looking for a more difficult way to break Jim free? (Chapter 34)

Although Huck’s wy would be faster and smarter, Tom’s way was more fun and adventurous because after all they are 13 years old and helping a slave escape isn't enough.

  1. Towards the end of chapter 41: “And then when I went up to bed, she come up with me, and fetched her candle, and tucked me in, and mothered me so good I felt mean and like I couldn’t look her in the face”. Why does Huck feel this way?-

Huck feels this way because he has never had the experince of a mother. Huck’s mother died when Huck was younger so he never got the experince of being tucked in or cared for.

    2. In chapter 42 we hear the doctor’s account of his experience treating Tom: “so I says, I got have help, somehow; and the minute I says it, out crawls this nigger from somewheres, and says he’ll help; and he done it too, and done it very well.” Can we come to an understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him?-

In chapter 42 our understanding of Jim and who he really is grows immensely. When Tom Sawyer gets gets hurt and the doctor need need an extra pair of hand’s Jim was there to help. This show’s how selfless and caring Jim is because despite showing his face and being locked away he still came out and helped.

3.What do we learn about Tom from what he says when he wakes up after being treated for the gunshot wound (Chapter 42)?

We learn that despite Tom tricking Jim and onlt helping him for the adventure Tom really does care about Jim. When Jim threatens o become a slave again Tom get’s mad because he cares.

4. You’ve finished the novel: Tell me, in three to four sentences, what you think of Huck.

In the beginning of the Adventures of Huckleberry finn, Huck is a young, inmature, naive boy, who dosent know or care much about the world around him. By the end of the book Huck has grown emensly becoming more caring shown by his realationship with Jim, more mature by his experince throught the King, Duke, and Jim.
